Creating Open Space

This is perhaps the most straightforwardly documented gap. Woburn's Open Space and Recreation Plan acknowledges that communities in densely populated urban neighborhoods — particularly those in and around older industrial areas — lack open space and recreational resources. Central Square is precisely such a neighborhood: a dense, mixed-use district with Main Street retail, apartments, and modest homes, but no park, no plaza, and no public green. The Castle's 3.5-acre parcel — with its grounds, mature trees, and civic presence — represents the only realistic opportunity to create meaningful outdoor and indoor community space in the heart of that neighborhood for the foreseeable future.
